Chant Grégorien - Vigile De Noël / Messe De Saint Etienne

This recording of Chant Grégorien was produced by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes in France, a site globally recognized as the center of the twentieth-century Gregorian chant revival. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, who served as choirmaster for over forty years, the monks sought to preserve and perform the liturgical music of the Middle Ages with a strict adherence to the rhythmic and melodic interpretations established by their house. This specific pressing, released by IPG in 1971, captures the liturgical depth of the Christmas Vigil and the Feast of Saint Stephen.

The musical design of this release reflects the Solesmes method, which emphasizes a fluid, non-metrical delivery intended to reflect the natural cadence of the Latin text. Dom Gajard’s direction was instrumental in setting the standard for how Gregorian chant was perceived and recorded throughout the mid-twentieth century. By the time this record was issued, the Solesmes choir had already achieved international renown for their extensive catalog of recordings, which served both as a spiritual resource for the faithful and an essential reference for musicologists studying the preservation of plainchant.
