Chant Grégorien: Les Vêpres Du Dimanche / Les Complies

This recording captures the monastic liturgical tradition of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes, a site globally recognized as the epicenter for the restoration of Gregorian chant in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, who served as choirmaster for over four decades, the monks sought to move away from the rhythmic rigidities of the past toward a fluid, oratorical style based on medieval manuscripts. This specific release on the Festival Classique label served as a vital document for those wishing to experience the meditative, monophonic purity of the Sunday Vespers and Compline services as practiced within the walls of the abbey.

The musical design and performance practices preserved here represent the culmination of Dom Gajard’s influential pedagogical method, often referred to as the Solesmes method. By emphasizing the relationship between the Latin text and the melodic contour, the monks achieved a singular, ethereal sound that became the standard for liturgical music throughout the Catholic world. Upon its circulation, this work and others in the Solesmes collection were lauded for their historical authenticity and their role in preserving a form of sung prayer that had been largely displaced in many parishes by the mid-twentieth century.
