Chant Grégorien - L'Histoire Du Salut

Released in 1970 by the Decca label, this recording features the Choeur des Moniales de l’Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Argentan performing chants centered on the liturgical theme of salvation history. The recording emerged during a mid-twentieth-century resurgence of interest in Gregorian chant, a period when liturgical music moved from strictly religious settings into the broader consciousness of classical music enthusiasts and those seeking meditative soundscapes.

The production sought to capture the austere beauty and sonic architecture of the Benedictine tradition. By documenting these monastics in their original environment, the producers aimed to preserve the authentic monophonic texture and vocal resonance inherent to the Abbey’s tradition. Upon its release, it was noted for its commitment to tonal purity and served as a standard reference for those studying historical performance practices within Western ecclesiastical music.
