Chant Grégorien: Les Vêpres Du Dimanche / Les Complies

This recording of Sunday Vespers and Compline was released by Decca in 1959, capturing the liturgical life of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The Solesmes monks are globally recognized for their dedication to the restoration of Gregorian chant, a project spearheaded by Dom André Mocquereau and continued by Dom Joseph Gajard, who directed this specific recording. The label sought to bring the meditative, monophonic purity of the Benedictine tradition to a wider audience during the mid-twentieth century, a period when the abbey’s choir gained significant international prestige for their rigorous academic and spiritual approach to the chant.

Dom Joseph Gajard’s direction is noted for its fluid, non-metrical rhythmic interpretation, which aligns with the historical principles of the Solesmes school. By recording these specific evening offices, the production intended to transport the listener into the monastic experience of the Liturgy of the Hours. The release was well-received by liturgical scholars and enthusiasts of early music, serving as a definitive reference point for the preservation of authentic plainchant during a time of significant transition in the Catholic Church.
