Chant Grégorien - Noel

This recording of Gregorian chants for Christmas was produced by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes, a French Benedictine monastery world-renowned for its dedication to the preservation and authentic performance of plainchant. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, who served as choirmaster for over forty years, the monks sought to move away from the rhythmic interpretations that had dominated early twentieth-century liturgical music, instead prioritizing the fluid, speech-like cadence of the medieval neumes.

Released on the Festival Classique label, this record serves as an auditory document of the Solesmes method, which became the standard for Gregorian chant performance across the Catholic world following the liturgical reforms of the early twentieth century. The austere and meditative quality of the recording reflects the abbey’s commitment to contemplative prayer, aiming to strip away theatricality to highlight the modal beauty of the ancient melodies.
