Chants de Terre et de Ciel / Cinq Poèmes de Charles Baudelaire

This release, part of the ORTF's concerted effort to archive French contemporary music, features works by two pillars of twentieth-century French composition. Messiaen's Chants de Terre et de Ciel is a song cycle dedicated to his wife, Claire Delbos, exploring themes of spiritual and domestic life. Debussy's Cinq Poèmes de Charles Baudelaire represents his early venture into symbolism, setting the complex and decadent verses of the poet to a musical language that would eventually define his mature Impressionist style.

The 1971 pressing highlights the performance of soprano Colette Herzog, who was highly regarded for her mastery of the delicate vocal demands found in both Messiaen and Debussy. By pairing these composers under the label of the French national broadcasting organization, the record sought to solidify the lineage of French art song. The production was received as a scholarly endeavor, providing listeners with access to high-fidelity recordings of repertoire that occupied a vital, if demanding, space in the European classical tradition.
