Chants Grégorien - La Liturgie Des Défunts

This recording of the Office of the Dead was produced by Decca as part of their commitment to preserving authentic liturgical music traditions during the mid-twentieth century. Conducted by Dom Joseph Gajard, the longtime choirmaster of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes, the performance features the Choeur des Moniales de l'Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Argentan. The recording reflects the rigorous Solesmes method of Gregorian chant, which aimed to restore the fluidity and natural phrasing of the medieval repertoire by moving away from the rigid, metronomic styles that had become prevalent in earlier centuries.

The aesthetic of the release, consistent with Decca’s classical catalogue of the era, prioritizes a clear, unadorned sonic environment intended to evoke the contemplative atmosphere of a monastic chapel. By documenting these monastics in their liturgical setting, the label sought to provide an authoritative archival resource for scholars and the faithful alike. The release was received as a definitive interpretation of the Requiem liturgy, lauded for its technical precision and the seamless, meditative quality that became the hallmark of Dom Gajard’s influential tenure in the field of chant restoration.
