Chants Grégorien 2

Released in the early 1950s on the Decca label, this recording serves as a significant installment in the documented repertoire of Gregorian chant by the Monks of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The Abbey of Solesmes has long been recognized as the global epicenter for the revival and scholarly preservation of plainsong, having dedicated decades to the restoration of the chant's authentic rhythmic and melodic traditions following centuries of corruption in the musical manuscripts.

The recording project was spearheaded by the monks under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, the abbey's choirmaster, who sought to capture the ethereal, monophonic precision of the liturgy for a wider audience. Upon its release, the record was lauded by musicologists and liturgical scholars for its acoustic clarity and the choir's dedication to the Solesmes method, which emphasizes a fluid, speech-like phrasing that eschews the rigid, metronomic structures typical of more contemporary Western choral traditions.
