Lore

Why it matters

This spell card is a practical utility tool, designed to protect your monsters by lowering their attack power in exchange for immunity against other spell and trap effects. Its status as a common card makes it a highly accessible staple for players looking to secure their field presence during critical moments of a duel.

Provenance

Where it came from

Forbidden Lance was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in the 2011 set Storm of Ragnarok. As a quick-play spell card, it was designed to provide a versatile tactical option by allowing a player to sacrifice a portion of a monster's attack power to shield it from other spell and trap effects. This design philosophy aimed to reward strategic timing, enabling players to protect key assets or disrupt opponent plays during either turn.

The version from the 2017 Starter Deck: Link Strike, numbered YS17-EN026, serves as a common-rarity reprint of this staple card. By the time of its inclusion in this set, the card had been firmly established as a recurring utility piece in competitive decks. Its inclusion in a starter deck was intended to provide new or returning players with access to a flexible defensive tool that had become a hallmark of the game's evolving meta-strategy.
