Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

This volume serves as a foundational reference on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, one of the most significant figures in the German Expressionist movement and a founding member of the artist group Die Brücke. Published by the Brücke Museum, the book functions as a retrospective examination of Kirchner’s intense, psychologically charged aesthetic, which sought to challenge traditional academic painting through jagged lines, discordant color palettes, and themes of modern urban alienation.

The publication reflects the mid-century institutional effort to re-evaluate and preserve the legacy of Expressionist art following the suppression it faced during the National Socialist era. By highlighting Kirchner’s graphic works and paintings, the contributors aim to articulate his role in redefining the subjective experience of the artist, prioritizing emotional expression over naturalistic representation. It is highly regarded by art historians for providing a structured entry point into the development of Kirchner's signature style.
