Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

This monograph was published in 2010 by Hatje Cantz to accompany a comprehensive exhibition of works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a central figure of the German Expressionist movement and a founding member of Die Brücke. The volume serves as a critical survey of Kirchner's artistic evolution, documenting his transition from the vibrant, collective spirit of Dresden and Berlin to his later, more introspective period in the Swiss mountains near Davos.

The book provides a rigorous academic analysis of Kirchner’s distinctive visual language, characterized by jagged forms and intense, non-naturalistic color palettes. It offers context on his struggles with the avant-garde shifting toward abstraction and the social isolation he faced during the rise of National Socialism. Hatje Cantz curated this edition to highlight both the psychological depth of his portraiture and his masterful command of woodcut printmaking, solidifying his legacy as an artist who bridged late nineteenth-century tradition and twentieth-century modernism.
