Where it came from
This volume serves as a comprehensive exhibition catalogue published by the Deutsche Akademie der Künste zu Berlin in 1960. It was produced to accompany a significant retrospective of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a pivotal figure in the development of German Expressionism and a founding member of the artist group Die Brücke. The publication was designed to reintroduce Kirchner’s graphic and painterly legacy to a post-war public, documenting his intense, emotive landscapes and his psychologically charged depictions of urban life.
The editorial effort behind this collection was part of a broader mid-century movement to restore the reputations of artists who had been labeled as creators of degenerate art by the Nazi regime. By cataloging Kirchner’s work with scholarly rigor, the academy sought to provide a definitive resource for historians and collectors, emphasizing the artist's innovative use of distorted perspective and bold, non-naturalistic color palettes that defined his early twentieth-century avant-garde career.
