Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in der graphischen Sammlung der Staatsgalerie

This catalogue was published in 1980 by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart to coincide with a dedicated exhibition exploring the graphic oeuvre of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. As a foundational figure of the Die Brücke movement, Kirchner’s woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings represent a cornerstone of German Expressionism. The publication serves as a scholarly overview, documenting the museum's extensive holdings of his prints and reflecting the institution's commitment to preserving the intense, psychologically charged aesthetic that defined his career.

The design of this collection reflects the academic standards of late 20th-century museum curation, prioritizing clear documentation and high-quality reproductions of Kirchner’s raw, angular linework. By focusing on his graphic work rather than his paintings, the book illuminates the artist’s mastery of the printing medium, which allowed him to experiment with jarring contrasts and distorted perspectives. Upon its release, the volume was received as a valuable resource for art historians seeking to contextualize Kirchner’s role in the development of modern printmaking.
