Where it came from
Issued in 2021, this commemorative 2-euro coin celebrates the centenary of the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra. The release serves as both a cultural tribute to the nation's spiritual heritage and a landmark in Andorran numismatic history, marking a significant milestone for the small principality as it honors its most important religious and national symbol.
The coin's design features a detailed reproduction of the Romanesque statue of Our Lady of Meritxell, set against a backdrop of architectural elements inspired by the sanctuary itself. The composition aims to capture the serene gravity of the original sculpture, which was reconstructed following a fire in 1972. The design was received by collectors as a sophisticated reflection of Andorran identity, balancing historical reverence with the technical precision required for circulation-grade commemorative coinage.
