Where it came from
The 3-euro coin series featuring the Crayfish was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2019 as part of the 'Colourful Creatures' collection. This series is known for its distinctive glow-in-the-dark technology, which highlights the animal subjects under ultraviolet light. The coin reflects Austria's long-standing tradition of commemorative numismatics, specifically focusing on native wildlife to both engage younger collectors and educate the public on regional biodiversity.
The design was crafted by the mint's talented engraving team, aiming for a balance between scientific accuracy and aesthetic appeal. The obverse depicts the crayfish in its natural habitat, while the reverse features a silhouette of other animals from the series. Upon release, the coin was well-received by European collectors for its high-quality finish and the innovative integration of fluorescent elements, marking a shift toward more interactive and visually dynamic coin designs.
