Where it came from
Oltretomba was a prominent series within the Italian 'fumetti neri' genre, which surged in popularity during the mid-1960s following the success of Diabolik. Launched in 1971 by the publisher Edifumetto under the direction of Renzo Barbieri, the series was designed to push the boundaries of horror and eroticism, reflecting the cultural shifts and the appetite for transgressive pulp fiction among Italian adult readers at the time.
Issue number 9 serves as a quintessential example of the series' aesthetic, which relied on sensationalist covers and gritty, black-and-white interiors to explore themes of the macabre and the supernatural. Created by a rotating stable of anonymous artists and writers typical of the fast-paced Edifumetto production model, the issue embodies the raw, provocative design sensibilities that defined the publisher's output throughout the 1970s.
