Where it came from
Released in 2019, this figure commemorates the live-action reimagining of Disney's The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau. Funko produced this item as part of the Pop! Disney series, cataloged as number 551, to coincide with the film's theatrical debut. The design reflects the photo-realistic aesthetic of the production, capturing the character Rafiki in his traditional pose as a mandrill, distinct from the stylized animated version released years prior.
The figure was created to appeal to both collectors of the Disney Pop! line and fans of the high-budget CGI spectacle that sought to modernize the 1994 classic. The design team focused on translating the film's complex, lifelike textures into the iconic Funko silhouette. Upon release, the item served as a milestone in the company’s ongoing strategy to provide merchandise for Disney’s modern slate of live-action adaptations, receiving a standard reception as a staple of the series.
