Where it came from
Released in 2019 to coincide with the photorealistic reimagining of Disney's The Lion King, this Funko Pop figure captures the character Rafiki. The design utilizes a flocked texture, a common Funko finish intended to mimic the feel of animal fur, which serves to bridge the gap between the stylized vinyl aesthetic and the cinematic goal of creating a lifelike, tactile representation of the iconic shaman baboon.
The figure is part of the broader Pop! Disney line, specifically series number 551 within the Lion King collection. Funko’s approach for this series focused on translating the hyper-realistic character models from the film into their signature oversized-head format. While the collection saw mixed critical reception mirroring the polarizing views on the live-action film's visual style, this specific flocked variant remains a notable example of Funko's experimental use of material textures in their character portrayals.
