Where it came from
The Angel card, designated as collector number 20, was released as part of the Marvel Super Heroes Commander Tokens set. These tokens were produced to accompany Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering 'Secret Lair x Marvel' collaboration, specifically designed to function within the Commander format. The token represents Warren Worthington III, the classic X-Men member known as Angel, and is intended to be used by players during gameplay when a card effect generates an Angel creature token.
The visual aesthetic of the card aligns with the broader Marvel artistic direction featured in the Secret Lair drop, which emphasizes a comic book-inspired illustrative style. Designers sought to bridge the gap between traditional trading card game mechanics and the visual iconography of Marvel's mutant heroes. Upon its release, the set was noted by collectors for its integration of high-fidelity character art into the functional space of tabletop gaming, serving both as a practical play accessory and a thematic collectible for fans of both franchises.
