Where it came from
Authority of the Consuls was originally introduced in the Kaladesh set, reflecting the rigid order and bureaucratic control of the plane's governing body. The card is designed to disrupt creature-based strategies by forcing opponents' creatures to enter the battlefield tapped, while simultaneously granting its controller a modest life gain advantage. This thematic design embodies the suffocating influence of the Consuls, who prioritize stability and regulation over individual agency.
For the Foundations set, the card was reprinted to serve as a recurring staple in white's color identity. The artwork and mechanical function aim to provide players with a reliable tool for managing aggressive creature decks in multiple formats. Its inclusion in Foundations underscores its status as an iconic piece of utility, emphasizing the set's goal of establishing a stable, evergreen gameplay foundation for both new and veteran players.
