Beast

The Beast token, identified as collector number 9, was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique for its direct-to-modern release strategy, focusing on high-complexity designs and reprints intended to support the Modern format. The token was included in booster packs to represent the creature type summoned by various cards within the set, such as 'Ravenous Squirrel' or 'Geyadrone Dihada', which require players to create temporary game pieces on the battlefield.

The artwork for this particular Beast token was illustrated by Wisnu Tan. The design leans into the thematic aesthetic of Modern Horizons 2, which frequently drew upon high-fantasy elements and visceral creature designs. By commissioning specific art for these tokens, the publisher aimed to enhance the player experience beyond simple utility markers, providing a cohesive visual language that matches the high-detail illustrations found on the main set cards. It has since become a standard fixture in the secondary market for players seeking thematic consistency in their gameplay.
