Where it came from
Champion of Wits was originally introduced in the Hour of Devastation set in 2017, designed as a blue creature featuring the eternalize mechanic. This ability allows players to exile the card from their graveyard to create a token copy with base power and toughness 4/4, emphasizing the value of card advantage and graveyard utility in competitive play.
The Commander 2021 printing, collector number 116, was included in the Prismari Performance deck. This version retained the original illustration by Magali Villeneuve, whose work is celebrated for its evocative, painterly style. By the time of this reprint, the card had solidified its reputation as a flexible staple for blue decks, balancing early-game draw filtration with late-game board presence.
