Where it came from
Champion of Wits was first released as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2017. Designed as a versatile blue creature, the card features an 'eternalize' mechanic that reflects the set's narrative of the plane of Amonkhet falling to the machinations of the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas. The promo version, marked as 31s, was distributed through the game's organized play channels as a foil participation or tournament reward.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character portraits. In designing this piece, Villeneuve focused on capturing the intellectual yet weary nature of the character, emphasizing the theme of knowledge preserved beyond death. The card was well-received by competitive players for its ability to filter cards through card draw and discard, making it a staple in various control and graveyard-focused strategies during its time in the Standard format.
