Where it came from
Champion of Wits was originally printed in the 2017 Hour of Devastation set, designed as a blue creature utilizing the eternalize mechanic to bridge the gap between early-game card filtering and late-game board presence. When the card was reprinted in the Forgotten Realms Commander set, it was included to support blue-aligned graveyard-centric strategies, reflecting the mechanical theme of card selection that is a hallmark of the color's identity in Magic: The Gathering.
The illustration by Magali Villeneuve captures the scholarly and mystical essence of the character, emphasizing the intellectual focus required to balance hand management against the graveyard. The artwork was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, and the card itself became a staple in Commander formats for its ability to provide repeatable utility through the combination of its enters-the-battlefield trigger and its graveyard-based activation cost.
