Where it came from
Champion of Wits was originally introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Hour of Devastation, designed by Wizards of the Coast to support archetypes centered on graveyard interactions and card filtering. The card serves as a blue creature that utilizes the 'eternalize' mechanic, allowing players to pay a cost to return a stronger, zombie-themed copy of the creature from the graveyard to the battlefield, providing consistent card advantage throughout a game.
The Aetherdrift Commander set, which features this specific printing as number 72, serves as a curated release for the Commander format. The artwork and design aim to evoke the flavor of the plane of Amonkhet, emphasizing a blend of desert aesthetic and ancient mythological motifs. It has been well-regarded by players for its efficiency in decks that benefit from discarding and drawing cards, securing its place as a staple in various blue-inclusive deck lists.
