Where it came from
Champion of Wits was originally introduced in the Hour of Devastation set, but this specific version originates from the New Capenna Commander deck series released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. These tokens and reprint cards were designed to bolster the thematic experience of the New Capenna expansion, which reimagined the classic Magic: The Gathering multiverse through the lens of a 1920s Art Deco urban aesthetic inspired by organized crime families.
The art direction for this series emphasizes the grit and glamour of the setting, moving away from traditional high fantasy toward a noir-inspired visual language. The card was selected for inclusion in the Commander supplemental products to provide players with a utility-focused creature capable of card filtering, reflecting the set's emphasis on strategic resource management and the complex, shifting allegiances synonymous with the city of New Capenna.
