Where it came from
Champion of Wits was first introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, representing a powerful blue creature capable of filtering a player's hand through its 'eternalize' mechanic. The card was designed to embody the intellectual prowess of the plane of Amonkhet, specifically tied to the trials overseen by the god Kefnet. Its mechanics were crafted to offer utility in the mid-to-late game, rewarding players for utilizing their graveyard as a secondary resource.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a distinct, ethereal aesthetic to capture the essence of a shimmering, magical construct. The design reflects the broader visual language of the Amonkhet block, which drew heavy inspiration from Ancient Egyptian themes and post-apocalyptic narrative structures. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and ability to generate card advantage, becoming a staple in various control and graveyard-focused strategies.
