Where it came from
The Clue token was released as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2016. It was designed to function within the set’s new mechanical framework, where specific cards would generate artifact tokens that players could sacrifice to draw a card, reflecting the investigative, gothic-horror themes of the Innistrad plane.
The token features illustrations by Johannes Voss, who contributed significantly to the set's visual identity. The design focuses on the tactile nature of a mysterious physical object—a magnifying glass and documents—to reinforce the set's 'investigation' mechanic, which was well-received by players for adding a layer of strategic resource management to the game’s interactions.
