Where it came from
The Clue token was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to represent the 'Clue' artifact subtype introduced in this set, which players create through various card effects to draw additional cards. The token serves as a functional game piece, capturing the gothic horror and investigative atmosphere of the plane of Innistrad through its distinct visual aesthetic.
The art for this token, illustrated by Johannes Voss, emphasizes the mysterious and occult themes central to the set's narrative. Voss utilized a lighting style and composition that reflects the investigation of supernatural phenomena, a hallmark of the Shadows over Innistrad block. Upon its release, the token was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its role in facilitating a core mechanical interaction that defined the limited and constructed environments of that era.
