Where it came from
Control Magic was released as part of the Pro Tour Collector Set in 1997, a special boxed product designed to commemorate the decks played by top performers at the 1996 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These cards are distinct from standard releases, featuring gold-bordered backs and signatures on the face, which rendered them ineligible for sanctioned tournament play but highly desirable for fans looking to replicate the strategies of professional players.
The card itself features iconic illustration by Melissa Benson, whose original artwork first appeared in the Alpha set. Benson's work on Control Magic is celebrated for its surreal, flowing aesthetic that captured the essence of Blue-aligned magic in the game's early years. Within the context of the 1996 World Championship decks, the card was a pivotal tool for tempo control, reflecting the high-level tactical environment of the era's competitive scene.
