Where it came from
Control Magic was originally introduced in the Alpha set in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a foundational blue enchantment for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card serves as a classic example of the 'steal' mechanic, allowing players to take control of an opponent's creature, which was intended to provide a swingy, high-impact interactive element in early gameplay.
The version from the Eternal Masters set, released in 2016, features artwork by Dan Dos Santos. This set was curated specifically to provide high-level draft environments and reprint powerful legacy staples, with Dos Santos updating the visual depiction of the magical tethering effect to align with modern aesthetic standards. The card remains a staple of the format, noted by players for its ability to shift the momentum of a game instantly.
