Control Magic

Control Magic was released in 1993 as part of the Unlimited Edition, the first widespread print run of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game following the limited Alpha and Beta releases. The card was designed to function as a powerful enchantment within the Blue color identity, allowing a player to take permanent control of an opponent's creature. This ability, known as theft or temporary control, became a signature mechanic for Blue, establishing the color's thematic role as a manipulator of the battlefield state.

The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Dameon Willich, whose style during the early years of the game was characterized by a distinct, painterly aesthetic that helped define the visual identity of the hobby. As part of the Unlimited set, the card features the iconic white border that distinguishes it from the black-bordered Alpha and Beta versions. It was received by the player base as a formidable tool for control decks, eventually leading to its status as a foundational card in the game's long-term competitive history.
