Provenance

Where it came from

Control Magic was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was designed to embody the blue color identity's core philosophy of manipulation and intellectual dominance, allowing a player to gain control of an opponent's creature.

The artwork was provided by Douglas Shuler, a prominent early contributor to the game's aesthetic. His illustration aimed to capture the ethereal, arcane nature of enchantment magic, fitting the high-fantasy tone established by the initial core set. The card was met with immediate tactical acclaim for its game-altering power, becoming a staple of blue-aligned strategies that has persisted through numerous reprints and iterations.
