Where it came from
The Birds of Paradise card from the World Championship Decks 2000 set is a special reproduction of the original card first printed in the Alpha set of 1993. This specific version was released as part of a boxed set that recreated the exact deck lists used by the top eight finishers of the 2000 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These cards are distinguished by a gold-bordered back and the signature of the player who utilized them during the tournament, making them non-tournament legal but highly sought after by collectors interested in competitive history.
The card illustration, featuring the iconic tropical avian creature, was created by artist Mark Poole. Poole’s original artwork for the card became a cornerstone of the game's early aesthetic, emphasizing the vibrant, naturalistic style that defined the initial years of Magic: The Gathering. Within the 2000 World Championship Decks, this card served as a staple for deck building, representing the power of early-game resource acceleration that remained a defining mechanic throughout the game's competitive evolution.
