Demon

The Demon token, marked as collector number 12, was introduced as part of the Starter Commander Decks, a product line released by Wizards of the Coast to provide accessible, ready-to-play options for players entering the popular Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. As a token card, its purpose is to represent a creature summoned onto the battlefield by specific spells or abilities, such as those found on cards like Rakdos, Lord of Riots or various black-aligned mechanics. Its design was intended to provide a clear, standardized visual aid for gameplay, ensuring that players could easily track temporary board states without confusion.

The visual direction for the Starter Commander tokens adheres to the established aesthetic of the modern Magic: The Gathering era, focusing on high-fantasy art that emphasizes the menacing and dark thematic elements associated with Demon creature types. These tokens were illustrated by the creative team at Wizards of the Coast to maintain stylistic consistency across the product line, prioritizing functional legibility and atmospheric detail. The reception has been largely practical, as these tokens are valued by players for their utility in managing the complex interactions inherent to Commander decks.
