Provenance

Where it came from

Opposition was originally introduced in the Urza's Destiny set in 1999 and was later reprinted with new artwork for the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. Designed as an enchantment, the card represented a significant tactical tool in Magic: The Gathering by allowing players to tap their own untapped creatures to tap an opponent's permanent. This mechanic was highly effective for controlling the game state, forcing opponents into a defensive posture by denying them the use of their lands or creatures.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was created by artist Jeff Miracola. Departing from the original’s more abstract depiction, Miracola's version provides a gritty, visceral interpretation of the card's theme of resistance and disruption. Upon its release in Seventh Edition, the card was received as a staple in control-heavy archetypes, reflecting the design philosophy of the era that emphasized board state manipulation and resource attrition.
