Giant Growth

Giant Growth first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the quintessential green spell that grants a creature a temporary power and toughness boost. The specific version from the 2001 Deckmasters collection was designed to celebrate the history of the game by featuring updated art from the artist Christopher Rush, who had also illustrated the original 1993 version. This release was presented as a boxed set containing two pre-constructed decks, intended to provide an accessible entry point for new players while honoring the game's foundational mechanics.

The art style of the Deckmasters version marks a transition in the visual evolution of the card, moving from the idiosyncratic, hand-painted aesthetic of early Magic to a more refined, polished look characteristic of the early 2000s. While the mechanical function of the card—a single mana instant—remains one of the most iconic and balanced designs in the game's history, the Deckmasters print is particularly prized by collectors for its distinct, high-quality frame and the nostalgic inclusion of Rush’s signature style. It serves as a bridge between the game's humble beginnings and its later status as a global phenomenon.
