What it does

1 generic mana, tap: Target creature gains banding until end of turn. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding a player controls are blocking or being blocked by a creature, that player divides that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Provenance

Where it came from

The Helm of Chatzuk was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering. Published by Wizards of the Coast, this second printing of the core set was intended to address the explosive demand following the game's initial Alpha release. It occupies a distinct space in gaming history as one of the earliest artifacts designed to provide players with a repeatable defensive utility, reflecting the experimental mechanical spirit of the game's first year.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, a foundational contributor to the early aesthetic of the game. Frazier’s approach emphasized a gritty, high-fantasy style that helped define the visual identity of the original core sets. While the Helm of Chatzuk is not considered a high-power card in competitive play, it remains a nostalgic piece for long-time collectors who value the hand-painted, ink-and-watercolor illustrations that characterized the hobby's formative era.
