What it does

1 generic mana, tap: Target creature gains banding until end of turn. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding a player controls are blocking or being blocked by a creature, that player divides that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Whether inspired by fear or by honor, all loyalty lends might.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Helm of Chatzuk was released in 1996 as part of Magic: The Gathering's Fifth Edition, a core set designed to consolidate and reprint cards from the game's early history. It was originally introduced in the Fallen Empires expansion, a set themed around the crumbling civilizations of the Sarpadian continent. The card reflects the lore of the Chatzuk, a tribe of humans whose artifacts were often associated with the sacrifice of followers for magical power.

The card was illustrated by the artist Edward Beard Jr., who contributed to many sets during the game's mid-nineties expansion period. The design depicts a dark, imposing helm imbued with necrotic energy, consistent with the grim aesthetic of the Fallen Empires narrative. Upon release, the card was generally viewed as a niche mechanical tool rather than a competitive staple, though it remains a noted piece of the game's early lore-heavy design era.
