Holy Strength

Holy Strength was released as part of the 1994 Magic: The Gathering Summer Magic set, an infamous print run intended to be the game's revised edition but which was instead largely destroyed due to a high volume of printing errors. This specific variant, known internally as Edgar, features artwork originally commissioned for the core Alpha and Beta sets, maintaining the classic aesthetic of early collectible card games. The design, credited to artist Anson Maddocks, captures a simple yet iconic interpretation of divine protection through a minimalist, illustrative style typical of the game's formative years.

The Summer Magic set occupies a unique place in trading card history, representing a moment where quality control issues inadvertently created some of the rarest and most sought-after variants in the hobby. Because the vast majority of the cards were recalled and pulped by the publisher, the surviving copies are prized by collectors for their historical significance and the distinct color saturation that separates them from standard printings of the time. It serves as a tangible artifact of the early, chaotic growth of Wizards of the Coast and their struggle to keep pace with the game's explosive popularity.
