Provenance

Where it came from

The Zombie token, specifically the version featured in the Modern Masters set, was created to provide players with a physical representation of the creature type frequently summoned by black-aligned spells in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Released in 2013, this set was designed to revisit and draft iconic cards from the game's history, requiring updated, standardized token cards to resolve board states during gameplay. The art reflects the game's gothic horror aesthetic, focusing on the shambling, decaying physical forms characteristic of the undead in the Multiverse.

The visual design of these tokens serves a utilitarian function, balancing thematic immersion with clear readability for tournament play. By providing a dedicated card for the Zombie creature type, Wizards of the Coast simplified the management of ephemeral game states. While these specific tokens are widely distributed among players of the Modern format, they are valued by collectors for their clean layout and the atmospheric illustration style that became a staple of the Modern Masters series.
