Provenance

Where it came from

The Insect token, numbered 27 in the Modern Horizons 3 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in June 2024. As part of a direct-to-Modern expansion, this token was designed to support various graveyard-focused and creature-generating mechanics introduced or revisited within the set. It serves as a functional game piece for cards like 'Infested Thrinax,' representing the swarm-based themes prevalent in the set's green and black design philosophy.

The art direction for this token follows the established visual language of the Modern Horizons series, which balances high-fantasy aesthetic with the functional clarity required for tabletop play. Illustrators for the token set were tasked with creating imagery that feels distinct yet cohesive within the broader Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This specific design was received as a standard utility token, valued by players for its clear representation of the creature type in a format where token clarity is essential during competitive play.
