Where it came from
Giant Growth debuted in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the quintessential green spell that grants a creature a temporary boost in power and toughness. As a foundational part of the core game mechanics, it was carried over into the Revised Edition, the third core set released in 1994, which sought to address early printing errors and broaden the game's distribution to a growing player base.
The artwork for this version was originally created by Anson Maddocks, who provided much of the early aesthetic direction for the game's green cards. His illustration, characterized by its organic and slightly surreal rendering of a monstrous beast, was intended to visually capture the magical infusion of strength described by the card's name. It was widely received by players as a staple of early limited and constructed play, serving as one of the most recognizable combat tricks in the history of the game.
