Mana Short

Mana Short was introduced in the earliest days of Magic: The Gathering as part of the Limited Edition Beta set, released in 1993. As a blue instant designed to drain an opponent's mana pool during their upkeep, the card reflects the game's initial focus on aggressive resource denial and counterplay. It was conceived during the development of the Alpha and Beta sets, a period when Richard Garfield and his team were establishing the fundamental mechanics that would define trading card games for decades to come.

The artwork for Mana Short is credited to Sandra Everingham, who contributed several pieces to the game's inaugural sets. Her style provided a surreal, hand-painted aesthetic that was emblematic of the early Wizards of the Coast art direction. While the card is not considered one of the 'Power Nine' artifacts, its simple, disruptive function made it a staple in control-oriented decks of the era, earning it a modest but enduring reputation among players who value tactical efficiency.
