Mana Short

Mana Short was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a tactical tool to disrupt an opponent's resources during their upkeep phase. The card reflects the game's early focus on reactive spellcasting, forcing players to manage their mana pools with high precision. By the time it appeared in the Seventh Edition core set, the card had become a staple of blue control decks, valued for its ability to prevent powerful plays before they could be cast.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was provided by artist Donato Giancola. Giancola leaned into a classic, high-fantasy aesthetic that captured the chaotic energy of magical disruption, moving away from the more erratic styles of the game's earliest years toward a more polished and professional look. Within the Seventh Edition, the inclusion of the star symbol notation marked this specific printing as part of a distinct aesthetic overhaul for the core set, which sought to standardize the game's visual identity for a growing global audience.
