Provenance

Where it came from

Mana Short was introduced in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural release of Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast. Conceived by Richard Garfield, the game was designed to blend the strategic depth of hobby gaming with the collectibility of baseball cards. Mana Short served as a tactical blue instant, intended to disrupt an opponent's resources by draining their mana pool during their upkeep, reflecting the set's early focus on reactive, high-stakes interactions.

The artwork was illustrated by Amy Weber, one of the original artists commissioned during the game's nascent phase. Her design features a whimsical, hand-painted aesthetic consistent with the eclectic, heterogeneous visual style of the Alpha set, which was created by a small group of freelance artists without a unified art bible. While not as widely discussed as the 'Power Nine' cards, Mana Short is regarded by collectors as a quintessential piece of Magic's foundational history, representing the experimental design era of the early 1990s.
