Where it came from
Prodigal Sorcerer, often affectionately nicknamed 'Tim' by the Magic: The Gathering community, debuted in the game’s 1993 Alpha core set before appearing in the Revised Edition released in 1994. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to provide blue decks with a versatile, repeatable utility effect capable of pinging small creatures or dealing direct damage to opponents, embodying the flexible, controlling nature of the color blue in early gameplay.
The iconic illustration of the Sorcerer was created by Douglas Shuler, whose style defined the aesthetic of the game's earliest years. Shuler depicted the figure with a distinct, somewhat whimsical appearance that became instantly recognizable to players. While the card’s power level has evolved as the game introduced more complex mechanics, the Revised Edition version remains a quintessential piece of Magic history, representing the foundational design philosophy of the collectible card game genre.
