Where it came from
Prodigal Sorcerer, colloquially known as 'Tim' among players, was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993. This version originates from the Friday Night Magic promotional series introduced in 2000, which was established by Wizards of the Coast to support local game store communities by offering unique, foil-finished versions of classic cards as tournament prizes.
The card features iconic original artwork by Douglas Shuler, whose rendering of the blue mage became a staple of the early game's aesthetic. The choice to include this specific creature in the inaugural year of the FNM program honored its status as a fundamental utility card in the game's formative years, celebrated for its repeatable damage-dealing ability which remains a defining mechanic for blue-aligned decks.
