Provenance

Where it came from

The Prodigal Sorcerer from the 2001 World Championship Decks reflects a unique era in Magic: The Gathering history, where Wizards of the Coast released exact replicas of the decks used by top-tier players in the previous year's World Championship. This specific card was featured in the deck list of a high-placing competitor, serving as a functional piece of competitive gaming history rather than a standard booster pack rarity.

The card artwork retains the classic aesthetic that defined the Prodigal Sorcerer’s iconic status within the game. Originally illustrated by Douglas Shuler in the early 1990s, the design captures the essence of a quintessential 'Timid' mage. In the context of the 2001 championship decks, the card was reprinted with a gold-bordered back and a distinct signature to distinguish it from tournament-legal cards, aiming to provide fans with an accessible way to experience the strategies utilized by world-class players.
