Where it came from
Resolute Archangel was released in the 2015 Core Set for Magic: The Gathering, a collection designed to bridge the gap between foundational gameplay and the more complex mechanics introduced in expansion sets. This card was created to serve as a powerful late-game stabilization tool for white-aligned decks, specifically targeting the life-gain archetype that has remained a hallmark of the color's identity throughout the game's long history.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a dramatic, sweeping composition to emphasize the Archangel's role as a divine protector. By focusing on the contrast between the ethereal, glowing wings and the battlefield below, Kieryluk captured the essence of the creature's ability to reset a player's health total. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by casual players and those participating in commander formats for its ability to swing the momentum of a game when a player is on the brink of defeat.
